Time zone settings determine how document timestamps are interpreted for SLA calculations when the source data does not include explicit time zone information.
Time zone configuration is applied at both the tenant and partner levels and is used to resolve the effective time zone for each document.
How CIC Determines the Time Zone
CIC determines the time zone used for SLA evaluation in the following order:
-
Time zone specified in the document
If the document includes a valid time zone (for example, in EDI DTM segments), that value is used. -
Default time zone for the document direction
- Inbound documents: Partner-level time zone
- Outbound documents: Tenant-level time zone
-
UTC fallback
If no time zone is provided and no default is configured, timestamps are interpreted as UTC.
If a time zone in the document is malformed or cannot be recognized, it is treated as not present and the configured defaults are used.
Configuration Guidance
- Configure partner-level time zones when inbound documents do not include time zone information.
- Set the tenant time zone to align with the primary region used for outbound processing.
- Include a valid time zone in the document when possible to avoid ambiguity.
Tenant Time Zone
Location: Admin > Settings > Time Zone
The tenant time zone defines the default time zone used for outbound documents when no time zone is specified in the document.
This value establishes the baseline for outbound SLA calculations.
Partner Time Zone
Location: Network > Partners > Partner Name
The partner time zone defines the default time zone used for inbound documents from that partner when no time zone is specified in the document.
Example Scenarios
-
Inbound document with no time zone in the payload and no partner default configured
Timestamps are interpreted as UTC. -
Inbound document with no time zone in the payload and a partner default set to America/Chicago
Timestamps are interpreted as America/Chicago. -
Outbound document with no time zone specified and a tenant default set to Europe/London
Timestamps are interpreted as Europe/London on the outgoing document. -
Document (inbound or outbound) explicitly includes a valid time zone
The time zone specified in the document is used. Configured defaults are not applied. -
Document includes a malformed or unrecognized time zone
The value is treated as not present. The configured default is used based on document direction. If no default is configured, timestamps are interpreted as UTC.
Relationship to Business Hours and Holidays
The resolved time zone is applied before evaluating document timestamps against configured Business Hours and Holidays (see Business Hours and Holidays).
Impact on SLA Calculations
The resolved time zone determines how document timestamps are interpreted prior to SLA evaluation.
